Indoor

The Nokia WiFi A-020W-A distributes the signal received from the WPON unit within the users home.

Outdoor

WPON brings gigabit services to customers using WiGig wireless technology, eliminating the need to bring fiber cables all the way to a home or building.

My contribution to this product ecosystem was the indoor gateway.

Responsibilities and Challenges

Responsibilities and Challenges

The A-020W-A functions as a Wi-Fi gateway. It is the indoor counterpart to the Nokia WPON system.

On this project I was the only industrial designer working on it, under the supervision of the Nokia Design Director. I was responsible for ideation, proposals for the mechanical engineering, supporting the mechanical engineering team on finalizing the set-up, process of tooling approval together with the vendors.

The final CAD was done by a surface modeller, to ensure the quality for tooling of this very challenging geometry.

The final shape of the device is quite far from the proposal, and is not what I wished this product to be. It was a business decision, made outside the design department.

3D print, prototype, tooling samples The top slot as a ventilation features was not very well perceived by the business. Therefore the design changed, to a surrounding slot feature.
